What is the Prostate?
The prostate is a very small walnut-sized secretory gland that sits at the base of the bladder. It is regulated by testosterone and related hormones, and is essential in human reproduction. The primary function of the prostate—which consists of both glandular and muscle tissue—is to release a substance that makes semen into a liquid. Unfortunately, the prostate's proximity to the bladder and the urethra can cause health problems for men after the organ's reproductive usefulness has passed. As the gland swells, it pinches the urethra, restricting urine flow—which can result in frequent urination and other prostate-related symptoms. At other times, bacteria can flow up the urethra, causing infection and painful urination.
The human prostate is made up of many different cell types that have complex and poorly understood interactions with each other. The male hormone testosterone and its related hormones have a major role in the growth and function of the prostate. The zonal anatomy of the prostate combines these cellular elements into a beautiful design for efficient mixing of fluids to allow human reproduction. However, beyond the reproductive years, this same architecture contributes to many prostate health challenges including uncontrolled or poorly regulated cellular growth.
Know Your Options
Prostate health challenges aren't a new discovery—they've been around for centuries. What is new are your options—namely natural alternatives. According to researchers, there's was a dynamic shift in prostate health treatments in the early 1990s, leading millions of men to opt for prescription drugs over surgery. Even today, there are two types of drugs used. The first helps relax the muscles near the prostate to relieve pressure and let urine flow more freely. And while some men find relief in the use of this alpha-blocker-type drug after a few days of use, significant side affects have also been reported—i.e., dizziness, headache and fatigue. The second drug targets the prostate directly helping it to shrink. It helps to relieve other prostate challenges by blocking an enzyme that acts on the male hormone—testosterone—to boost organ growth. Think of this 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor drug as a goalie, deflecting enzymes from trying to attack (and inflame) your prostate . Unfortunately, this drug has also been associated with an increased risk of side effects like the following: decreased interest in sex, trouble getting or maintaining an erection and reproductive challenges (smaller amounts of semen with ejaculation).
Given the undesirable side effects, the expense and concern regarding long-term use of these prescription medications, it's more important than ever to consider your options. Today's advancement in nutraceutical science affords you targeted, natural prostate-supportive alternatives, many of which also have be shown effective in clinical trials. Be sure to discuss all of your options with your primary care physician as you explore protocol to preserve the health of your prostate for years to come.
