As a child with dyslexia, I was perceived as slow, even dumb, which didn't do much for my self-esteem or confidence. I spent most days trying to stay under the radar and avoid being called on by the teacher. I was so much of an introvert that I wouldn't speak to anyone unless they spoke to me first. After I graduated high school, I got a job as a maintenance man in a potato chip company. I had always been good with my hands and was mechanically inclined, so I figured I'd do well, and I did. Eventually, I became a manager and thought that my $22,000 a year job was the best thing I would accomplish in my life. Looking back, it's hard to believe now that I make more than five times that annual income, every month.

It was about that time that I was introduced to network marketing. A friend was having a meeting about water filters and although I didn't know much about network marketing, I did know the neighboring town had the worst water around. Turns out the filters were easy to sell — the problem was that they weren't consumable goods. That meant I was faced with having to find new customers every month. I needed something where I could do something once and then have it pay me over and over — that's where consumable products come in.

I took my experience and began working with a nutritional supplement company — an opportunity with a highly consumable product. Not long after, I received a commission check for $3,000 and then it grew to $5,000 a month and I couldn't help but think how great it was to be earning this money AND be in business for myself. I dreamed about the day when my check would reach six figures, but I admit, I never believed I would actually attain it — at least not with the company I was working with.
